Our Mission

Numbers 4 Justice is a collaborative of scholars and scholars-in-training dedicated to advancing anti-racist research. Our work leverages critical racial theory and quantitative methodologies to understand the multidimensionality of racialized identities and experiences and the complexity of systemic racism. Through collaborative research, training, and knowledge dissemination, we strive to catalyze positive change in our communities and beyond.

Our Vision

We draw inspiration from visionary scholars Ida B. Wells-Barnett and W.E.B. Du Bois, who believed in the transformative potential of quantitative research. We continue their legacy by using numbers as central instruments for understanding inequality, refuting racist arguments, and informing social policy to advance meaningful social change within our political, cultural, and social systems.

Our Values

Commitment to Social Justice

We are committed to advancing social justice through research endeavors that capture the full humanity of racially minoritized people, not only injustice and problems faced, but also resistance, resilience, and joy.

Centering Lived Experience

Our focus is centered on and informed by the lived experiences of racially minoritized people, ensuring our work is rooted in their perspectives and sensitive to their needs and values.

Focus on Intersectionality

We value research that deepens our understanding of intersectional identities and experiences, recognizing the richness and complexity within racially minoritized communities.

Multidirectional Mentorship

We prioritize collaborative teamwork, multidirectional mentorship, and hands-on training to empower the next generation of researchers committed to social change.

Contextualized Understanding

We consider the structural, historical, and social contexts of race and racism as an integral part of our research. This contextual understanding forms the foundation of our quantitative work.

Meaningful Engagament

We believe in actively engaging, listening to, learning from, and collaborating with the people and communities who are centered in and impacted by our research.

Research for Transformation

Our work is grounded in theories and frameworks that consider the multiple dimensions of race and racism, not solely for understanding but as a precursor to transformative action.

Informing Policy and Practice

We are dedicated to producing insights that actively inform policy-making, practice initiatives, and collective action to foster enduring social change.
